// Representing our first private commission, the D'Amico residence is a ground-up new-construction single-family home located in the historic Little Italy neighborhood of Cleveland. Externally, the project's facade flattens the qualities of the prototypical "house" by omitting ornamentation and typical articulations, and reformats them to suit an in-fill townhome typology. These formal moves are complemented by a minimalist material palette that is carried throughout the exterior into the interior. Spatially, a vestibule leads to an inner hall where the primary stair core acts as a barrier separating public and private spaces. The staircase to the private upper level is tucked away and hidden, a methodology of spatial planning derived from sources such as Edith Wharton and Ogden Codman's pivotal 1897 manual of interior design "The Decoration of Houses." In this design, the means of circulation are deliberately repositioned to generate spatial tension. The central core invites and activates connections, views, and moments of contemplation, while also providing privacy on the upper level.
