// This community engagement project with the Medina Encore Entertainment Company initiated as the material synthesis of their 2022 show theme “James Bond”. Drawing reference from Maurice Binder’s original 1962 screen production opening credits of “Dr. No”, the first installment in the James Bond series, this deconstructable, modular, and transportable set aims to produce a restrained graphic theatrical set. Utilizing individually programmable, internally illuminated polycarbonate circles, the design consists of nine custom frames with on-board electronics that situate on custom movable carts. By limiting the design to white primitive shapes, the infinite world of color is allowed to jar and excite the audience. The goal of this project is to create an immersive and engaging experience for the audience, using a combination of technology and design to bring the theme of “James Bond” to life. The use of modular and transportable elements allows for flexibility and adaptability in the set design, making it suitable for a variety of performance spaces and locations. Overall, this project aims to push the boundaries of traditional theatrical set design and create a unique and memorable experience for the audience. Following the success of the first season, the polycarbonate circles were retooled, repainted, and reused in 3 further set dressings for 2 consecutive years of Medina High School Choir’s “Showtime” concert extravaganza and a 2nd season of Showchoir competitions with the addition of a life-sized operable spinning “Tardis” based on the popular “Dr. Who” franchise.
